Notes for users of Excel 2016 for mac

The setting-up of Praat Launcher on Excel 2016 for mac is slightly complicated.

Add-ins Folder

Possibly:

  •  ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content.localized/Add-Ins.localized

cf. http://macadmins.software/docs/UserContentIn2016.pdf

Setting up

Additional jobs are required if you run Praat Launcher on Excel 2016 for Mac.

  1. Create the following directory if it does not exist:
    ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.microsoft.Excel/
  2. Download filepraatlauncher.applescript (an AppleScript file), and put it in the directory created above.

Example (on the terminal):

cd ~/Library
mkdir "Application Scripts"
cd "Application Scripts"
mkdir com.microsoft.Excel
cd com.microsoft.Excel
cp ~/Downloads/praat_launcher_xlam/praatlauncher.applescript .

File/Folder access settings

After the first launch of Praat, the following dialog windows might appear. Click [Select] button to grant file access.

Older Versions

History

Version 3.0.0 (Sep. 5, 2016)

  • Newly supported: Excel 2013/2016 for win; 2011/2016 for mac
    • Notes for mac users: Excel 2011 for mac, rather than 2016 for mac, is recommended as far as Praat Launcher is concerned; on the latter, additional jobs would be required.
  • Two types of add-ins are provided:
    • [OLD-STYLE] CommandBar based user interface (extension: .xla)
    • [NEW-STYLE] Ribbon based user interface (extension: .xlam)
      CommandBar (.xla)Ribbon (.xlam)
      Windows20032007, 2010, 2013, 2016
      Macintosh2004, 20112016
      Supported versions of Microsoft Excel
  • Notes for mac users: On Excel 2011 for mac, use .xla add-in, not .xlam.
  • Context menus (right-click menus in the case of Windows) are eliminated.
  • Shortcuts are added:
    • Ctrl-Shift-F1: Create the Setting Sheet
    • Ctrl-Shift-F2: Adjust the Setting Sheet
    • Ctrl-Shift-F3: Version Info

Version 2.1.2 (Mar. 14, 2013)

  • Corrected a bug that causes the launcher to give an incorrect error message when positive integers containing "0" (e.g., 10, 102, ...) are specified in the SettingSheet.

Version 2.1.1 (Aug. 8, 2012)

Totally Updated!

The aims of this update:

  • to allow it to accommodate various types of data, including CSJ-RDB (in preparation)
  • to make the design as simple as possible

  • New (version 2.1.1) settingsheet_new.jpg

Major Modifications

  • Four mutually independent commands (Command 1-4) are provided, each of which can take its own values (e.g., Sound/TextGrid files).
  • In the Setting Sheet, files must be specified with their absolute paths and extensions.
    • The following items were abolished:
      • Folder containing the TextGrid Files
      • Folder containing the Sound Files
      • TextGrid File Extension
      • Sound File Extension
      • Sound Filebasename Suffix 1
      • Sound Filebasename Suffix 2
      • Column/Field for Filebasename
      • Column/Field for Sound Filebasename Suffix
  • Notations like "<A>", "<B>", ... are available in specifying the files; they represent the values of the cells at the intersection of the current row and the specified columns.
    • Examples:
      C:\path\to\<A>.wav
      C:\path\to\<A>-L.wav
      C:\path\to\<A>-<E>.wav
    • Numerals ("<1>", "<2>", ...), besides alphabets, are also available.
    • Substrings of the values of the cells can also be obtained with the following notation:
      <column[,start][,length]>
      (NOTE: Arguments enclosed with "[" and "]" are optional; however, start cannot be omitted when length is specified.)
      • column: alphabet or numeral
      • start: the starting position (NOTE: The number begins with 1, not 0)
      • length: the number of characters (NOTE: If omitted, returns everything through the end of the string.)
      • Examples:
        C:\path\to\<A,1,10>.wav    # A01F0055-L-foo  =>  A01F0055-L
        C:\path\to\<A,5>.wav       # foo-A01F0055-L  =>  A01F0055-L
    • The notations "<BASENAME>" and "<SUFFIX>" were abolished.
  • The notation "column[,start][,length]" is also available in "Column/Field for TIMESTAMP". (NOTE: "<" and ">" should NOT be included here.)
    • Examples:
      D,6,9      # 0001 00000.329-00004.849  L:-001-001  =>  00000.329
      D,16,9    # 0001 00000.329-00004.849  L:-001-001  =>  00004.849
      ("0001 00000.329-00004.849 L:-001-001" is an instance taken from *.sdb (Short Unit Word) files in CSJ, in which the timestamps (as well as the channel info) are embedded in Column D.)
  • The value of either Sound or TextGrid file may be null (but not the both); Praat Launcher tries to open only the specified one.
    • The commands to open either Sound or TextGrid file were abolished.

Minor Modifications

  • The cells on Column E of the Setting Sheet become editable. (NOTE: The values on Column E are simply ignored; users can make use of it to escape some values.)
  • Praat Launcher causes an error if (i) the values of TIMESTAMP1 and TIMESTAMP2 are both numeric, and (ii) the value of TIMESTAMP1 is larger than that of TIMESTAMP2.
  • Renamed "(Setting -> )SettingSheet" to "Create".
  • Provided "(Setting -> ) Adjust" Menu, which adjusts the Column width of the Setting Sheet.
  • The default values of "Select: from the Specified Point Minus..." and "Select: to the Specified Point Plus..." changed from 0.03 to 0.01.
  • [Windows Only] Slashes ("/") in the values of file specification are taken as path separators ("\").
  • [Windows Only] Praat Launcher gives an error message before launching Praat, if the specified Sound/TextGrid files do not exist. (NOTE: In Macintosh, Praat, not Praat Launcher, gives an error message.)

Version 1.5.2 (not released on the web)

  • When a file (e.g., a Pitch file) is specified in "Other File(s) to be Read" (renamed as "Other Files" in Version 2.1.1), Praat Launcher tries to open it with an appropriate editor, and jump to the specified regions within that editor.
    • NOTE: Praat Launcher does NOT synchronize multiple editors. Check the "Group" button (at the rightmost bottom in the editor) to synchronize them.

Version 1.5.1 (not released on the web)

  • Corrected a bug that caused Praat to halt (in some ---not the author's--- environments) when the value of TIMESTAMP1 is less than 1.

*1 Praat Launcher does NOT run on Excel 2008 (for Macintosh), which lacks VBA.
